Nvidia agrees $12.9B Hugging Face acquisition for open AI power

If this deal closes, Nvidia will own the de facto app store for open AI models at the same time it dominates the underlying compute stack. Hugging Face is where large parts of the open ecosystem exchange weights, datasets and evaluation benchmarks; folding that into Nvidia gives the chip giant an extraordinary lever over how and where open models get trained and deployed.

Strategically, this is about more than software revenue. All roads from Hugging Face lead back to GPUs, whether on cloud providers or in on‑prem clusters. Nvidia is watching its largest closed‑model customers race to build their own chips. Owning the main open‑model distribution hub is a way to keep demand for Nvidia silicon high even if OpenAI, Anthropic and others partially defect to in‑house hardware. It also lets Nvidia steer tooling and optimizations toward its architectures first.

For the broader race to AGI, consolidation cuts both ways. A vertically integrated Nvidia–Hugging Face stack could accelerate open‑source model progress by giving researchers cheaper, better‑optimized infrastructure. But it also raises questions about how independent and truly “open” that ecosystem remains when a single commercial vendor controls both the chips and the main collaboration platform.
