Google Home opens to ChatGPT, Claude and rival AI agents

Google turning Google Home into a neutral MCP hub for external agents is a quiet but important shift in the consumer AI landscape. Instead of insisting that Gemini be the only intelligence in the home, Google is betting that controlling hardware, protocols, and subscription relationships is more valuable than controlling every layer of the software stack. In practical terms, it means households will be able to mix and match assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and others to orchestrate cameras, thermostats, and appliances from a single, deeply embedded platform.

For the race to AGI, this creates a new kind of battleground. Agentic systems are no longer just chatbots in a browser; they are being wired into physical environments where they can act continuously and in concert. Standardizing on MCP as the interface language between agents and devices also strengthens the emerging multi‑agent ecosystem, making it easier for smaller labs to plug into real‑world use without owning hardware.
