Meta buys Stilla.ai to boost WhatsApp and Instagram AI agents

Stilla.ai is a pure-play AI agent company that built a multiplayer, context-rich assistant for internal business workflows. Meta pulling it into Meta Business Agent tells you where the company thinks long‑term value sits: in agents that can act across messaging surfaces, not just chat with customers. By wiring Stilla’s tech into WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, Meta is trying to turn its messaging apps into full‑funnel commerce channels driven by semi-autonomous agents.

From an AGI perspective, this is a move to industrialize agentic patterns at gigantic scale, even if the underlying models are not themselves frontier. Business Agent will need planning, tool use, memory and alignment with merchant policies to handle transactions safely. That creates both training data and operational experience in running millions of narrow AGI‑like processes in the wild. Combined with Meta’s open‑source model strategy, it could make the company a central player in “agent OS” infrastructure, not just model hosting.

It also raises competitive pressure on other ecosystems. If Meta can show that embedded agents materially lift conversion and reduce support costs for small businesses, Apple, Google and Amazon will face pressure to match those capabilities inside their own messaging, search and commerce products.
