Saudi Arabia boosts data centers to become AI cloud hub

Saudi Arabia’s data center build‑out is a textbook example of nation‑states treating AI compute as a strategic resource on par with oil and ports. Growing from 68 MW to roughly 440 MW of capacity in four years, with multi‑gigawatt AI campuses on the drawing board, positions the Kingdom as a regional gravity well for frontier training and inference. Coupled with relatively cheap power, available land and centralized decision‑making, this could make Saudi data centers attractive to both Western and Chinese AI players looking to diversify beyond US and EU jurisdictions.

In the AGI context, whoever controls abundant, low‑cost compute can shape which labs get to run the largest experiments and how quickly. If Saudi‑backed campuses really deliver on multi‑GW, hundreds‑of‑thousands‑of‑GPU promises, they become plausible homes for the next generation of trillion‑parameter models and large‑scale agent simulations. That amplifies geopolitical questions about export controls, alignment standards and whose rules govern the models trained there. It also puts pressure on smaller countries in the region to either piggyback on Saudi infrastructure or double down on their own sovereign AI investments.
