Forterra deploys generative-AI ground vehicles in live combat in Ukraine

Forterra’s deployment in Ukraine is a preview of how embodied AI will mature under the harshest possible conditions. The company is fusing classical autonomy with generative AI to create ground vehicles that can navigate complex terrain and support logistics and casualty evacuation under fire. For now, Ukrainian operators are keeping a human firmly in the loop, but the system is already collecting the kind of long-tail edge cases—minefields, drone swarms, electronic warfare—that no simulation can fully capture.

Strategically, this gives Forterra and its competitors like Scout AI, Field AI and Overland AI an enormous data and credibility advantage in military robotics. It also accelerates the translation of frontier model techniques into embodied control stacks, a key stepping stone toward more general agentic systems that can operate in messy physical environments. That has direct implications for AGI: the closer we get to models that can robustly perceive, plan and act in open-world settings, the more pressure there will be to integrate those capabilities into civilian robots, vehicles and infrastructure.
