California advances AI kill switch plan with new executive order
On September 18, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order directing state agencies to accelerate independent oversight of AI companies and study requirements for an emergency AI “kill switch.” The order also speeds implementation of earlier AI safety laws and sets up an expert working group to deliver policy recommendations within two months.
