China's Two Best AI Labs Will List at $50 Billion and 500 Billion Yuan. Anthropic Is Asking for $2 Trillion.
On one Tuesday, Moonshot AI closed its last private round at about $50 billion and pointed at a Hong Kong listing, DeepSeek neared an 80 billion yuan round led by Tencent and a battery maker, and Anthropic circulated a draft prospectus at up to $2 trillion with $518 billion of compute commitments inside it. Here is why the public check we said was missing is now booked for 2027 on two exchanges, what the 20 to 40 times gap is made of, and the one line to divide by when each prospectus lands.
Eleven days ago we wrote that AI price discovery was happening in China first, for chips, while the US frontier labs had pushed their listings to 2027 and their private marks had no public check at all. On October 6 the model labs joined the queue, on both sides of the Pacific, in a single day.
## What landed on Tuesday
Moonshot AI, the Beijing lab behind the Kimi chatbot, closed its final private round at a valuation of about $50 billion and is preparing a Hong Kong IPO in the first quarter of 2027 that could raise up to $5 billion, per the Straits Times (deal record). The same reports say DeepSeek is close to securing between 80 and 100 billion yuan in new funding led by Tencent and CATL. The DeepSeek round is at least 80 billion yuan, about $12 billion, backed by Tencent and the battery maker CATL, at a minimum valuation of 500 billion yuan, ahead of an early 2027 IPO.
Across the ocean, Anthropic has circulated a draft IPO prospectus seeking a valuation between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion, according to The Inference. The filing details at least $518 billion in long-term compute and equipment commitments, and warns that the company's own models could attempt to resist shutdown or manipulate users.
Put the three prices on one line. Anthropic's floor is 36 times Moonshot's mark, and more than 20 times DeepSeek's floor at the dollar rate implied by the same report.
## The check we said was missing now has a date
In September the only public prices for AI were Chinese chips. Now four frontier labs have a listing in view: Moonshot in Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2027, DeepSeek in early 2027, OpenAI, which moved its IPO to 2027 while talking to investors at $1.2 trillion, and Anthropic, whose draft has no date in our record but whose $2 trillion ambition has been reported since September 12, with Nvidia weighing a $10 billion anchor.
Whoever prints first sets the multiple the rest are measured against. If that is Moonshot, the first public dollar price for a frontier lab will be set in Hong Kong, by international investors, for a Chinese company.
## What the gap is made of
It is not the model. Last week a US lab benchmarked its new open weights against Chinese models, not against Claude. And on September 11 Anthropic's own threat dossier accused Alibaba, Moonshot AI and DeepSeek of distilling Claude. The labs it named are the ones now raising at the prices above.
Three things in our records do explain part of it.
**The compute line.** Anthropic's draft carries at least $518 billion of commitments. In September we counted roughly $90 billion of six-year leases signed in four weeks, and argued a signed lease behaves like debt. Our records hold no equivalent line for either Chinese lab. DeepSeek told investors in July that its commercial APIs mainly fund long-term AGI work. Thinner reporting is not proof of frugality, but $518 billion of fixed obligations under a valuation makes it a different asset.
**Who writes the cheque.** DeepSeek's money comes from Tencent and a battery maker. Anthropic's anchor, if the talks hold, is its chip supplier, and SoftBank is paying for its OpenAI equity with $11.1 billion of high-yield bonds. When the supplier buys the shares, part of the price is customer financing.
**The July pause.** DeepSeek was in talks at $71 billion in July, then put the round on hold after remarks attributed to its founder went viral. That paused round was for at least 10 billion yuan at roughly 480 billion yuan. The new one is at least 80 billion yuan at a 500 billion yuan floor: eight times the cheque, at a price about 4 percent higher. Chinese frontier marks barely moved in a quarter in which OpenAI's went from $852 billion to a $1.2 trillion conversation.
## Hedges
All three are reports. Moonshot's round and listing are "according to reports", DeepSeek is "close to" closing, and Anthropic's document is a draft described by one outlet. The yuan figures are the reports' own, as are the dollar conversions. A Reuters analysis the same day notes there is still limited evidence of the broad productivity gains that would justify current valuations, which cuts against every number here, on both exchanges.
## What to do with this
Put four dates on one page: Moonshot in Hong Kong in the first quarter, DeepSeek early 2027, OpenAI 2027, Anthropic undated. The first print becomes the yardstick, and the trade in 2027 is the spread between the Hong Kong multiple and the New York one, not either price alone.
When each prospectus lands, read one line, total compute and equipment commitments, and divide the valuation by it. Anthropic's draft prices the company at under four dollars of valuation per dollar of committed compute. If a Chinese filing shows a far higher ratio, you will know whether the gap is cheaper compute or thinner disclosure. Moonshot AI, DeepSeek, Tencent, CATL and Anthropic are on our tracker, and every round above is in the investment feed.
