ByteDance’s Doubao Work pushes office AI agents in China

Doubao Work is ByteDance’s answer to the question of where AI agents actually live in the workplace. Rather than staying inside a chat window, the product is a dedicated desktop client that can operate browsers, office apps and even local tools on a user’s behalf. In practice, that looks like an AI coworker tightly coupled to Feishu, ByteDance’s Slack plus Office competitor. The design echoes what Western players are doing with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Google’s Workspace agents, but in a Chinese app stack with different defaults and constraints.

For the AGI race, this signals two things. First, China’s consumer app giants are committing to agent centric productivity experiences, not just chatbots, and are willing to ship fairly powerful automation into mainstream office environments. Second, the integration of agents with domestic workflows and compliance regimes will generate a massive amount of usage data that does not leave Chinese platforms. That means China’s leading models will be trained on work patterns, languages and edge cases that Western labs cannot easily access, potentially narrowing some application gaps even if frontier benchmarks remain comparable.
