Google DeepMind shifts leadership, Hassabis becomes chief scientist

This reshuffle formalizes something that has been happening informally for a while: Google is splitting the work of “running a giant AI business” from “pushing the frontier of AGI research.” Demis Hassabis moves into a cross-Alphabet chief scientist role and chair of DeepMind, which frees him from shipping pressure and lets him focus on long-horizon research and safety questions. Koray Kavukcuoglu, a highly respected architect of DeepMind’s systems, becomes the operational lead for Gemini and model development. That should tighten product focus at a time when Google has been criticized for moving too slowly relative to OpenAI, Anthropic and fast-moving Chinese labs.

The more surprising piece is Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat leaving after nearly three decades to start Discovery Loop, an AI company aimed at scientific and engineering discovery. That suggests top Google talent believes there is room outside the big labs for highly specialized agentic systems that automate science and engineering workflows. For the race to AGI, the signal is twofold: Google is betting that clearer governance will help it execute, while elite researchers are willing to walk away from trillion‑dollar incumbents to pursue more focused visions of AI‑enabled discovery.
