This ruling cements the first mega-settlement over training data in the generative AI era and signals that large-scale, unlicensed scraping of books carries real financial consequences. For the AGI race, the immediate impact is not that Claude will suddenly get worse—Anthropic has long claimed it stopped using the pirated corpus—but that the legal cost of ‘data laundering’ has been priced into the market at 10-figure levels.

Strategically, that narrows the path for upstart labs who might have been tempted to quietly mirror Anthropic’s early tactics to catch up.
