Google sues SerpApi over mass scraping for AI data

This lawsuit sits directly on the fault line between AI’s appetite for data and the legal regimes that govern the web. Even though the complaint focuses on scraping of search results, not explicitly on AI training, the same pattern underpins many model builders’ data pipelines: large‑scale harvesting of third‑party content via automated queries. By going after SerpApi, Google is signaling that it wants tighter control over the interfaces through which others can access and monetize ‘its’ index—precisely the raw material foundation models need.

Strategically, that matters in two ways.
