China unveils Fengyuan V1.0 AI model for global weather forecasting

Fengyuan V1.0 is part of a broader pattern: domain-specific AI systems in high-stakes areas are becoming national infrastructure. Weather modeling is compute-intensive, data-hungry, and strategically important for everything from agriculture to defense. By branding Fengyuan as open-source and highlighting indigenous IP, China is signaling that it wants to be a rule-maker, not just a user, in scientific AI models.
