India sees surge in AI startups with 248 new firms launched in February

India’s startup pipeline is quietly reorienting itself around AI, and the February numbers show just how dramatic that shift has become. Two hundred‑plus AI‑focused incorporations in a single month doesn’t mean 248 future unicorns, but it does mean founders increasingly see model development, tooling and vertical AI as the default opportunity space. That has implications for talent allocation: more engineers and product people in India will be cutting their teeth on AI problems rather than on generic SaaS or IT services.

From the perspective of the AGI race, India’s role may be less about building the very largest frontier models and more about supplying an enormous layer of applied innovation on top of them.
