Research Engineer, Notifications (Machine Learning)

Job Description

Research Engineer on the ChatGPT Notifications team, focused on building ranking and recommendation systems that decide what to notify users about, when, and through which channel. The role sits at the intersection of product and research: you design and ship ML systems (including LLM-powered approaches) that drive user engagement while respecting safety and value considerations.

Responsibilities

• Design and build end‑to‑end ranking and recommendation systems for notifications, from modeling and feature engineering through evaluation and deployment.
• Adapt and apply LLMs to ranking problems, including prompt‑based methods and fine‑tuning.
• Run rigorous offline and online experiments to measure notification relevance, long‑term user value, and other key product metrics.
• Collaborate with research teams to bring cutting‑edge modeling techniques into production while balancing reliability, latency, and cost.
• Contribute to the broader Growth ML stack and help set technical direction for user engagement systems.
