Machine Learning Engineer, Perception and Sensor Simulation

Job Description

ML engineer on Waymo’s Simulator team building ultra‑realistic perception and sensor simulations (camera, lidar, radar) using LLMs, foundational world models and generative/reconstructive techniques to evaluate and improve the Waymo Driver. Hybrid, reporting to a Senior Staff Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

• Develop ML models for ultra‑realistic sensor and perception simulation of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and full environments.
• Apply generative AI (diffusion, foundational world models, multi‑modal models) to improve realism, controllability and scalability of simulations.
• Work closely with foundational AI research teams to transfer state‑of‑the‑art research into scalable simulation products.
• Design experiments and evaluation metrics that stress‑test AV perception stacks across varied, long‑tail conditions.
• Collaborate with software engineers and data scientists to integrate simulation results into training and validation workflows.
